Whoredom

When you just cannot stop cheating

They shall eat, but not be satisfied; they shall play the whore, but not multiply, because they have forsaken the LORD to cherish whoredom, wine, and new wine, which take away the understanding.Hosea 4:10-11

Our fidelity goes beyond what happens between the sheets or the secret getaways we plan. It starts in the heart. Our incessant desire to find comfort and satisfaction in a myriad of ways with one common result sin against God.

That comfort is often sought in the people we serve, entertain or even depend. Other times, it is in the things we pursue like bigger careers, more expensive cars or homes and even higher education. Regardless, we set a goal for enrichment or enlightenment that tends to take us away from our true purpose, which is glorifying God.

How can we glorify God when we chose to spend ourselves into ridiculous debt? That is the key issue that manifests itself from the above pursuits that tug is away from God. This highlights this classic passage:

"No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.Matthew 6:24

Debt is the god of this world. We rush back to that altar time and time again without hesitation because our pursuits justify our expenses. It commands our attention and allegiance.

Unfortunately, we lose sight of our subconscious allegiance to this debt that makes us partial to righteousness, mercy and grace. We turn a blind eye to justice because our silence has been paid. For this, we face judgment that is found in our dissatisfaction that cycles into more wanton behavior that cements our disobedience to God and indifference to truth.

Lord, please help us be dismayed of our infidelity and destroy the wine cup and help us smash the various altars that we have erected in Your Presence.
